Clay rocks almost always spawn under the water, but fortunately for all of us, usually in the shallow waters close to the shore.
So dive into the water and search for clay stones that are hard to miss. These are huge boulders that are highlighted when approached.
In order to get clay, just hit the rocks a few times with a pickaxe and collect all the clay that has been scattered from the rock.
Don’t attempt looking for clay on the surface, as this material doesn’t spawn in dry areas.
