The PlayStation 5’s accelerated processing unit, aka the big honkin’ fan, has three temperature systems controlling the fan speed. Ootori said those are what Sony will update based on data collected from future game releases.

Sony will collect data based on how each game performs and what stress each game puts on the cooling unit. The sensors will tell the fan to work harder — and louder — for more demanding games to mitigate any overheating.

In contrast, the PlayStation 4 cooling system only kicks in after the internal sensor realizes it’s getting hot, instead of when the system starts detecting heavy usage from the processors.

Hardware optimizations aren’t the only overhaul Sony is implementing for the PlayStation 5. The user interface and social aspects are seeing some big changes as well.
